Kentucky is another great place full of history, beautiful horse farms, tradition and Southern cuisine. I guess I’m a little bias when I say Kentucky is one of the most beautiful places in America, and I’m sure if you have ever visited Kentucky you would agree. I grew up in Lexington and still call it home and love everything our small city has to offer.
One of the best things about living in Kentucky is the horse racing and southern cooking. Living in the same city as Keeneland racetracks, I have the joy of watching and experiencing the atmosphere of horse racing every April and October. Today is opening day of Keeneland and in honor of this beautiful day I wanted to dedicate this week to the Kentucky Hot Brown.
The Kentucky Hot Brown is one of the best southern comfort foods around. The hot brown originated at the Brown Hotel in Louisville. In the 1920s, the Brown Hotel was popular for their dinner and dancing parties and there was over a thousand people who would come to dine and dance all night. The music would start around 10 p.m. and continue till 1 a.m. The guest would get hungry around midnight and the chef
would normally make ham and eggs.
The guests were growing tired of ham and eggs and Chef Fred Schmidt decided to make a new turkey sandwich that had bacon on top and a creamy Mornay sauce covering the sandwich. And just like that, a new creation was born! The Hot Brown!!
If by chance you have attention the Kentucky Derby on your bucket list make sure you also include eating a Kentucky Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel! If you don’t care for horse racing or even coming to Kentucky, make sure you make a hot brown at home, I promise you won’t regret it!!
